March 12th - An invitation to Friends, Pancake Breakfast attendees and anyone else, to observe a full moon sunrise at the Chadwick North native trees site. A few brave folks ventured out in the freezing cold for hot chocolate and donuts to watch. Due to some cloud cover the full moon was not visible, however, the ice crystals produced a magnificent vertical light pillar from the sunrise.
I have decided with this experience it would be a good thing to have a camera that not only would give the date, time and photo details, but temperature data would be handy as well. I think I would call this a phenology camera item.
March 13th - Dr. Julia Kuzovkina visits the Willow Collection to talk with Chadwick staff and volunteers about her Ph.D. research on the diversity of willows - Salix. She began planting these research specimens in 1999 which came under the Chadwick's care to become the nation's largest diverse willow collection. Plants were collected from all over representing the Old World, the New World and Asia.
Julia is to the left in the above photo.
March 14 - Pruning workshop is co-presented by Rich Pearson, Cox Arboretum horticulturist at Five Rivers Metroparks in Dayton and Tomasz Przepiorkowski of Studebaker Nurseries.
